Message of the Course Director

Dear doctors,

The Mastology Association for Northern and Southern Mediterranean that started, at the end of the last century, as a mobile university gathering a limited number of academic physicians aiming to teach the art and science of Mastology (called also Senology) succeeded, in the year 2010, to be recognized by Montpellier University Faculty of Medicine as an official provider of mastology education.

Starting by the coming course in Beirut, the mastology courses organized by MANOSMED will be accredited for the Montpellier diploma. Four courses passed with success will make the candidate eligible for the diploma that will be delivered by the French university.

The program of these courses covers all the diseases of the breast and introduces the candidate to all the diagnostic and therapeutic methods that are used in the management of these diseases. Interactive sessions enrich the courses and help the physician in his practical life.

General surgeons, Gynecologists, General practitioners, Pathologists, Radiologists and Oncologists are all invited to subscribe to the MANOSMED courses that give them, for sure, a rare opportunity to enrich their knowledge and strengthen their clinical practice without having to loose a complete year studying abroad the discipline of Mastology.

Beirut is the first city to host twice a MANOSMED course. The first one was organized in June 2006. A little more than 70 physicians registered and passed successfully that diploma session. The Lebanese 2006 session was a great success and was followed by the creation of the Lebanon chapter of MANOSMED. Ten Lebanese physicians instituted this chapter and started preparing the second course that will be offered on the 8th of June 2011.

Let us all engage in this important event that proves that Lebanon is an important partner in the academic life of the Mediterranean!

Let us all take advantage from this course that will facilitate, to the utmost, the acquisition of knowledge  and the perfection of practice in the art and science of Senology.

MASTOLOGY ASSOCIATION OF NORTHERN & SOUTHERN MEDITERRANEAN

MANOSMED was created in 1991 in Barcelona (Spain) by eminent physicians, working mainly on breast diseases. It was announced, for the first time, in the meeting of the Spanish Association of Senology, by professor Miguel Prats-Esteve. The first president of MANOSMED, professor Jean-Louis Lamarque was also elected in this meeting.

Later on, professor Mourou (Monaco) and Agnantis (Greece) served as presidents of MANOSMED. The present president is professor Stephanos Zervoudis from the University of Ioannina (Greece). The present executive board comprises one Lebanese member, professor Négib Geahchan, from Saint Joseph University, and president of the Lebanese Society for General surgery.

A Lebanese chapter was instituted in 2006, at the moment of the first course given in Lebanon. This chapter comprises eminent breast specialists who are devoted to the progress of science in Senology. Some of these specialists became, later on, members of MANOSMED International: Saad Bizri, Georges Aftimos and Michel Saadé.

This association, started in 2002, to organize annual courses in the Mediterranean countries. In the concept of a mobile university, all its members, who are exclusively university physicians, chose voluntarily to move from their homeland to where the course is given and to share their knowledge and experience with their fellows of the Mediterranean area. The following courses have been organized since 2002:

Ø  2002: Hammamet, Tunisia, organized by professor Radhi Hamza

Ø  2003: Ioannina, Greece, organized by professor Niki Agnantis

Ø  2004: Alexandria, Egypt, organized by professor Omar Omar

Ø  2005: Bucharest, Romania, organized by professor Alexandru Blidaru

Ø  2006, Beirut, Lebanon, organized by professor Négib Geahchan

Ø  2007, Bari, Italy, organized by professor Vincenzo Lattanzio

Ø  2008, Montpellier, France, organized by professors Jean-Bernard Dubois and Jean-Pierre Daurès

Ø  2009,  Tartous, Syria, organized by professor Hassan Jadid

Ø  2010, Geneva, Switzerland, organized by professor Georges Vlastos

In 2010, Montpellier University, the home university of the first president of MANOSMED Jean-Louis Lamarque decided to create the DIU MANOSMEDI Diploma of Mastology and agreed that the Mediterranean association is the exclusive official provider of the senology education that leads to this certification. The courses organized by MANOSMED will all be accredited by Montpellier University. The first course to be academically recognized will be given in Beirut, in June 2011. Beginning in 2011, two courses will be proposed annually, one in the spring and the second in the autumn.

The candidates, physicians in practice or residents, are supposed, for the obtention of the diploma, to register in 4 courses of their choice, and to pass the written exams that will be locally proposed at the end of the courses. The diploma is equivalent to 10 ECTS and should be transferable to European universities.

After the Beirut course, the next meetings are scheduled in Marrakech (Morocco) and Paphos (Cyprus).

INVITATION TO MANOSMED COURSE OF JUNE 2011

In 2010, the University of Montpellier Faculty of Medicine decided to create the MANOSMEDI DIU (Diplôme Interuniversitaire de Mastologie)  offered to physicians and students who register to MANOSMED courses taking place in different Mediterranean countries. The candidate is asked to register to four courses and to pass successfully the written exams which follow immediately the courses.

Each course is a 3-day event (≈ 25 hours of didactic lectures, seminars and case discussion), which means that, for a candidate to receive the DIU diploma, a total amount of 100 teaching hours is required.

MANOSMED Executive Committee decided in its last meeting that the different courses of MANOSMED will cover different areas in the art and science of Senology. There will be sessions on Benign Diseases of the Breast, Early Breast Cancer, Advanced Breast Cancer and Exploration of the Breast Diseases. The candidate will be asked to assist to four courses covering these four areas, in order to fulfill all his educational objectives.

The Lebanese course will be dedicated to the BENIGN DISEASES AND CONDITIONS OF THE BREAST. This will be covered by ten sessions, of 90 minutes each, and two seminars of Radiology and Pathology. Each lecture (of a total of 60 communications) is restricted to 12 minutes, and followed by a 3-minute discussion or clarification. The session moderators will plan the session and the discussion. All teaching lecturers are asked to limit their interventions to the exact title of their lectures and to give precise and up to date information. They are allowed a total number of 30 slides maximum.

The final written exam will cover all the given lectures and will be comprehensive and interactive. A certificate of success will be given to those who pass this exam, while those who participate to the course, do not wish to pass the exam or do not succeed will receive a certificate of attendance.
